Actress and humanitarian, this woman makes gliding from her volunteer work in the refugee camps of Rwanda to the red carpet of awards shows look easy. But in her beautifully written piece for Elle UK, she says it doesn’t always feel right to move quickly between the two extremes of Hollywood and the third world. Markle grew up watching her hard-working parents give to those in need, and after achieving a bit of stardom she quickly realized that it came with a responsibility to use her voice for important social causes. On Markle’s website she blends fashion advice with pieces on self-empowerment because she wants “integrate social consciousness and subjects of higher value than selfies.” Hear, hear! Politicians and diplomats are her heroes, and she realizes that without the fame that comes from her day job (she’s a star on the hit TV show Suits) that she’d never be able to have such a big impact on the causes to which she’s dedicated. Markle is now a spokesperson for UN Women and World Vision. Oh, and by the way, she’s dating Prince Harry – yes, that Prince Harry! But despite those ties to royalty, Markle says she’d like to “focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through glass ceilings.” Um, what a quote! She’s a great role model for women and girls, and one I’d like to see more of in 2017.
