Volunteer with Your Kid (s)

Sometimes we need a reminder that there are lots of people out there who need our help, and often they’re right in our backyards! It’s easy to get involved and lend a hand. And you can bring your girls to help too! Occasionally, my kids and I go to the local food pantry to help pack boxes for folks in need. We really enjoy our time there and the busyness of stuffing boxes, handling and inspecting the donated food, and being part of a team and assembly line. As we leave, we often see families lined up to collect their food boxes and give them warm smiles as we pass. It helps us remember all those who could use our time and donations. (And our smiles!) Next we’re going to volunteer together at the local soup kitchen. Now that my older kids are 15, they can come along with me to help serve. They’re nervous about going, but I think that’s actually a good thing! Because life is serious. And it doesn’t always go as planned. When others fall on hard times and we’re in a position to help, we should!

Spark the Conversation: How do you use your time to help others? Could you ask your girl to join you in volunteering somewhere local? Talk to her about the ways you two could get involved in your community. It’s more fun than you might think! And you’ll have lots to reflect on together afterwards.
